History
Grosse Pointe was first settled more than 100 years ago, but most of the city as it is now was built in the middle of the 20th century, especially around and after World War II. This makes Grosse Pointe Woods different from older parts of Grosse Pointe.
In 1927, the last unincorporated part of Grosse Pointe Township was turned into the Village of Lochmoor, which became the city. In 1931, the Stanhope-Allard strip of land was taken from what was then Gratiot Township and added to the village. In 1939, the village went from being called Lochmoor to Grosse Pointe Woods. However, it didn’t become a city until 1950.
Geography

It is the only one of the five Grosse Pointes that does not have a lakeshore. However, the city owns a park on Lake St. Clair in nearby St. Clair Shores.
